Who Was the Legislature Working For?

Looking back at the actions of the past legislature raises the question, “who were they working for?”

It certainly wasn’t for the voters who elected them. The programs that help ordinary people and benefit the state as a whole were targeted for cuts.

We can see how out of step the legislators are by the overwhelming—64%--voter support for the1% sales tax increase to save education, health, and law enforcement programs. The legislature could barely agree to send this issue to the voters to decide.

Most of the legislation that passed carried out the agendas of—and was actually written by—various special interest groups such as the NRA; Grover Norquist’s tax-abolishing group; and the anti-immigrant group with ties to white supremacists (they call their group “FAIR”!), who wrote our infamous immigration bill.

It is Time for a Change
March has come in like a lion that has torn into funding for education, essential services, our parks, and, maybe more importantly, health care and jobs.

The recently passed budget will cut KidsCare for Arizona's most vulnerable children and reduce ACCCHS eligibility among needy Arizonans.

Because of these cuts Arizona will lose 19,600 jobs in health care and an additional 22,400 jobs from industries that rely on health-care spending.

According to The Arizona Republic, the Republican led plan to save $765 million will keep Arizona from getting $1.5 billion in federal matching funds.

It is time to change the legislature, which has been lead in the wrong direction by the Republicans for over 40 years. Republicans seem to think that giving tax cuts to the rich and corporations is the way to solve a financial crisis. It is time to elect Democrats who will solve these problems responsibly and help Arizona prosper.

NCDC Chair’s February Message

In case you haven’t been paying attention, in Arizona, the Republican Party has been in charge of the Legislature for 42 years!

The Legislature has made cuts in taxes for corporations and a few people, but the more important fact is that they drastically changed the tax code. The Republicans’ new tax code favors the wealthy and puts the tax burden on the rest of us, the middle class.

Little Colorado River Democrats
The LCRD's are looking forward to the coming election year and getting our Democratic candidates elected!

There is much work to do: getting out our message, getting petitions signed, collecting clean election contributions, registering voters, signing voters up for the Permanent Early Voter List, and getting voters to polls! These jobs will take a lot of time and effort. I know our members will be up to the challenges, and we will be successful in turning Arizona Blue!

We will also continue with our monthly Winslow Adopt a Street cleanup and plan for our annual fundraiser.

State Education Candidates Blast Incumbent

Democrats seeking the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction joined Wednesday to decry the quality of public education in Arizona and blast incumbent Republican Tom Horn. But they saved their sharpest criticism for the Republican-controlled Legislature.

Jason Williams, a teacher who served as executive director of Teach for America in Phoenix, said 76% of Arizona fourth graders cannot read at grade level, and many of them will wind up in prison.

Penny Kotterman, a teacher who served as president of the Arizona Education Association, will compete with Williams in the Aug. 24, 2010 primary. She said 66% of children fail to graduate.
